Democratic congressional candidate Tom White on Thursday accused his opponent, Republican Lee Terry, of protecting reckless behavior on Wall Street by voting against a bill to overhaul financial regulations.
“Terry, yet again, chose to side with Wall Street over Main Street,” said White, an Omaha attorney and state senator.
By Opposing Reform, Rep. Lee Terry Has Yet Again Chosen Wall Street Over Main Street
Omaha, NE – At a press conference today, Tom White took Rep. Lee Terry to task for his record of putting Wall Street ahead of Main Street. After voting to bail out Wall Street, Terry has consistently voted to protect the Big Banks’ greed and recklessness, even voting against comprehensive Wall Street reform yesterday.
“With his vote yesterday, Congressman Terry yet again chose to side with Wall Street over Main Street,” Tom White said. “Since supporting the Wall Street bailout, Lee Terry has doubled down in his support for Wall Street’s irresponsible behavior by voting against TARP reform, against limiting tax-payer funded bonuses at bailed out banks, and against comprehensive financial reform.”

After the U.S. Senate passed its Wall Street reform bill last night - on a 59-39 vote, with Ben Nelson in favor and Mike Johanns opposed - this debate heads to a conference committee. But, it will come up for a final vote in both Houses of Congress. When it does, we must all be more prepared to hold our elected officials accountable than we were in December, when all three of Nebraska's Republican Congressmen voted against the House's Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act with hardly a peep from the Nebraska press or the local progressive community.
Thankfully, State Senator Tom White is already on top of this issue, making the following statement in his campaign against six-term incumbent Lee Terry:
Rep. Lee Terry Continues to Side With Wall Street Over Main Street
After Supporting Wall Street Bailout, Terry Opposes New Law to Crack Down on Wall Street Abuse
Omaha, NE – Today’s cloture vote in the Senate on the Wall Street reform bill is another major step toward much-needed financial regulatory reform that Congressman Lee Terry has been working to derail. When given the opportunity to side with Nebraska taxpayers and community banks on Main Street or big banks on Wall Street, Lee Terry stood with Wall Street and opposed the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
“Congressman Terry has consistently chosen to side with Wall Street over Main Street,” said Tom White. “Since supporting the Wall Street bailout that was funded by taxpayer dollars, Lee Terry has doubled down in his support for Wall Street’s irresponsible behavior by voting against TARP reform, against limiting tax-payer funded bonuses at bailed out banks, and against comprehensive financial regulatory reform. It’s no wonder that Washington special interests and bailed-out banks continue to fund his campaign.”
LJS: Sen. Durbin has 'high hopes' and a 'positive feeling' about White

La Vista - Voters need a reminder, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin said Saturday night.
A reminder about the past and what’s changed in this country since the last election, he said, shortly before addressing hundreds of Nebraska Democrats at the party’s annual Morrison Exon Dinner
“They’ve forgotten what we’ve gone through,” he said
Durbin, who represents Illinois, last came to Nebraska to stump for then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in his campaign for president.
Since then, Durbin said, the economy has taken an upswing and the war in Iraq is close to ending. But people aren’t quite satisfied yet
If there was excitement back in 2008, there is “roiling emotion” now, Durbin said, particularly about the economy, despite the progress his party has made with Obama as president and with a majority in Congress.
“I think people are still looking for change,” he said.
State Sen. Tom White — who looks to have the best chance of any Democrat in the state of unseating an incumbent Republican this year — hopes that’s true.
OWH: Terry-White race draws national attention

Omaha's congressional race is on the radar in Washington, D.C.
The results of Tuesday's primary election - most notably a strong showing from a little-known challenger to Republican Lee Terry - was met with glee by national Democrats. They say it's a sign the time is right for a Democrat to unseat the six-term Republican.
