OWH: White gives Terry run for money

It's going to be a fight.

The two candidates for Congress in the Omaha area - Republican Lee Terry and Democrat Tom White - released financial information Thursday that showed both are busy building war chests for 2010.

Terry is an incumbent and clearly has an edge in the fundraising battle, but White proved he could raise cash.

OMAHA, Neb. -- With more than a year to go before the general election, Nebraska's 2nd District congressional race is already on track to become a bank-buster.

Democrat Tom White raised more than $204,000 in the quarter that ended Sept. 30, according to the campaign finance report he filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. He's seeking to unseat 2nd District Republican incumbent Lee Terry, who raised more than $226,000 for the quarter, according to his campaign's filing.

Nebraska needs a Democratic congressman to look after the state's vital needs, state Sen. Tom White says.

"The Nebraska delegation is isolated from power and cannot effectively protect the state's interests," the Omaha legislator said during an interview this week.

Democrats hold the levers of power in the White House and exercise control in both houses of Congress.

Nebraska's three-member House delegation is all Republican.

Republican U.S. Rep. Lee Terry received some good news and some bad news Wednesday.

The good news? The number of GOP congressman considered vulnerable in 2010 dropped from 10 to five, according to a list released by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The bad news? Terry is still on the list.

OMAHA -- Describing himself as an independent pragmatist, State Sen. Tom White on Wednesday jumped into Nebraska's premier 2010 election contest.

White will carry the Democratic banner into battle against six-term Republican Rep. Lee Terry in metropolitan Omaha's 2nd Congressional District.

"I'm a guy who works the shovel," White told a news conference at the Omaha Press Club.
