Tom White made it clear this morning that he plans to run for Congress as a tax-fighting, pro-business Democrat who loves the word "nonpartisan."
White, 52, officially jumped into the race this morning against six-term Republican Rep. Lee Terry, paving the way for a long campaign. He made the announcement surrounded by about two dozen friends and family. State Sen. Brenda Council provided the opening comments and former Chief Justice Tom white introduced his son.

SCHUYLER, Neb. — Carol and Russ Reha found themselves staring down the barrel of a health care dilemma that faces many families.
One of their twin sons, Cole, is a student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He requires daily medication to control chronic asthma symptoms.
It's one reason he is pursuing a career as a physician, possibly as an allergist, said his mother, a nurse for the Schuyler Public Schools.

OWH: Terry, White Already Trading Shots Over Health Care
Joseph Morton, Omaha World Herald
August 23, 2009
WASHINGTON — The 2010 midterm elections are more than a year away, but Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., and a likely challenger already are trading shots in the intensifying health care debate.
State Sen. Tom White of Omaha said that Terry has offered nothing more than a “glib sound bite” in response to the massive problems posed by runaway health care costs, while Terry defended his central health care proposal and said that White is attacking him without offering any concrete alternatives of his own.

Rep. Lee Terry hardly had time to return to his Washington office after winning his sixth term in November before being confronted with challengers for 2010.
With that election a year and a half out, the Nebraska Republican is already finding himself a target of Democrats hoping to gain control of his 2nd Congressional District seat.
Democratic state Sen. Tom White of Omaha announced earlier this month that he is forming an exploratory committee to consider a run against Terry.

It wasn't until September 18th of last year - with less than seven weeks to go - that the Cook Political Report downgraded 2nd District Republican Congressman Lee Terry's chances from "likely" to "leaning" in the 2008 election. Now facing the prospect of a top-tier challenge from Democratic State Senator Tom White in 2010, Terry already finds himself in that same weakening position a full 15 months before the election.
But, it's not just political analysts who are looking at this match-up and thinking Terry's in a lot of trouble. The National Republican Congressional Committee has just added Terry to its Patriot Program for protecting the most endangered House Republicans.

State Sen. Tom White (D) announced Monday that he is forming an exploratory committee to look at challenging Rep. Lee Terry (R) next year.
White is considered a top recruit for Democrats, who have not aggressively targeted Terry before. Terry won re-election in 2008 with 52 percent, his lowest total since being elected to Congress in 1998, and President Barack Obama won the Omaha-based 2nd district in last year’s presidential race.
