KPTM: Congressional Race a Promising to be a Fierce Battle

Next month may come and go without a congressional election, but it'll be a far different story in 2010.
The 2nd U.S. Congressional race in the Omaha metro promises to be one of the nation's fiercest political battles.
Republican Rep. Lee Terry barely regained his seat last November, beating Democratic challenger Jim Esch by only four percentage points.
"He survived a bad political environment and was reelected again," admits Terry's 2010 campaign manager Dave Boomer.
But can the six term congressional winner avoid becoming a one-time loser in 2010?
The National Republican Congressional Committee lists terry as one of 21 'Patriot Program' members.
The list is composed of Incumbent Republicans the committee says are likely to be targeted by Democrats during the 2010 election cycle.
"Here's a campaign any one of 21 that could have some challenges. If you could send them a check, please do it," says Boomer.
Terry is also one of five congressional Republicans that will benefit from an upcoming 'Patriot Day' fundraiser.
Originally, the day was intended for ten incumbents, but now only the five most vulnerable remain.
Terry's Republican primary opponent says that is a problem.
"I know I wouldn't be proud of being on the vulnerable list," says Matt Sakalowsky.
The local businessman says that is why he believes his campaign is getting what he calls "grass-roots" support.
State Senator Tom White, the race's Democratic challenger, says Terry's seat is wide open.
"I know a lot of Nebraskans have told me they haven't seen a return on their money," the Omaha senator says.
But the fundraising day could bring in more than $100,000 for Terry's reelection.
If Terry survives the primary, it is money that would no doubt go towards taking on White.
White concedes that is a lot of fundraising cash, but money he doesn't think will ultimately make a difference.
"It's not going to be won in Washington. This is race for Omaha and Sarpy County. Nebraskan's will decide this race," says White.
